Metcalfe has included the Essex pedigrees in the volume he edited for the Harleian PREFACE. is the only authority for saying- that a Visitation was made in this year." It should be noted that a portion of the Visitation of 1623 (which contains 281 Pedigrees) has been printed in the Collections of the Surrey Archaeological Society.

It might be observed that where the following charges appear in the Arms, viz., "a lion rampant," "an eagle displayed," the Editor has blazoned them throughout as "a lion " and " an eagle." The Editor has given much attention to the identification of the names of the quartering^, and trusts that these identifications, which are comprised within brackets, may be found correct.
